VA2K - Helping Homeless Veterans & Promoting Health

April 13, 2018

Print Version (MS Word)

ALBUQUERQUE – The 8th Annual VA2K Walk & Roll will be held on May 16 at USS Bullhead Memorial Park, starting at 11 a.m. Helping homeless veterans and promoting healthy lifestyles are what the annual VA2K Walk & Roll event is all about.

The VA2K event includes a short, two-kilometer walk (approximately 1.2 miles) and the community is invited to participate.  The event is free and it is suggested that participants be at the park 15 minutes prior to the start. The park is located at the southern end of San Pedro Drive SE, just south of Gibson Blvd.

Participants are encouraged to bring a voluntary donation such as clothing, toiletries, packaged food or bottled water.  These donations will be collected and distributed to local homeless veterans.  Donations are not required in order to participate.

Nationally, since 2011, donations valued at approximately $2 million dollars have been raised for homeless veterans.

“The VA2K Walk & Roll is one of the ways we encourage our staff to adopt healthy lifestyles.  It’s also a great way for them to help homeless veterans,” said Sonja Brown, Acting Director, New Mexico VA Health Care System.

Community groups who are interested in participating in the event should contact the local VA2K coordinator, Jennifer Snell at (505) 900-4256 or via email at Jennifer.snell4@va.gov.  Find out more about the VA2K: http://www.publichealth.va.gov/va2k/.
