New Mexico VA Seeks Caregivers in Artesia
April 14, 2017
ALBUQUERQUE – The Medical Foster Home (MFH) program, managed by the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS), is actively recruiting caregivers in Santa Fe, Gallup and Artesia.
Veterans in rural areas will have an alternative to nursing home placement and long-term care, thanks to the rural expansion of the MFH program. This program provides care to veterans who have complex medical and/or mental health needs and are no longer able to live independently. Under the program, the veteran resides like a family member in the home of the caregiver in the community. Medical Foster Homes currently house veterans in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
All Medical Foster Homes are inspected and approved by the NMVAHCS, which ensures caregivers are well trained to provide the best possible care.
“For a number of reasons, many veterans prefer a smaller, more home-like setting rather than an institution, when they are in need of safe, personal care and supervision,” said Nikki Hughes, NMVAHCS Medical Foster Home Coordinator.
The MFH program, in partnership with the NMVAHCS Home Based Primary Care program, provides the caregiver with ongoing support and training needed to enhance a caregiver’s skills and success. Fiscal responsibility lies between the caregiver and the veteran or the veteran’s healthcare advocate. Veterans wishing to live in a Medical Foster Home are first required to be enrolled for VHA healthcare. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a caregiver for veterans under the MFH program, please contact Nikki Hughes at (505) 265-1711, ext. 7784.
