PGY1 - Residency Program in Pharmacy

The Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center is a Level 1 tertiary referral center with a 24-hour Emergency Room located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the heart of the Land of Enchantment.  As a teaching institution, the Medical Center is affiliated with the University of New Mexico and the Central New Mexico Community College.  The medical center is authorized to operate 310 beds, which include 184 acute hospital beds (including a 26 bed Spinal Cord Injury Center), and an extended care facility.  Home care is provided through the Home Based Primary Care program.  Community based clinics operate in several locations throughout the state.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of the New Mexico VAHCS PGY1 Residency is to produce a competent pharmacist that provides patient-centered pharmaceutical care and is knowledgeable in pharmacy operational services for both acute care and ambulatory patient populations.

Qualifications

Must be a United States citizen and have graduated from an American Council on Pharmaceutical Education accredited college or school of pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.  All pharmacy residents are required to become licensed, but may be licensed in any of the United States. It is highly recommended that licensure be obtained before the start of the residency.

Program Description
The PGY1 Residency is a full-time, year-long commitment. Required Learning Experiences include Practice Management, along with at least one LE providing direct patient care for hospitalized patients and at least one LE for ambulatory patients. Elective experiences may include Primary Care, General Medicine, Anticoagulation, Critical Care, Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care, Behavioral Health, Geriatrics, Spinal Cord Injury, Oncology, Sterile Products and Home Based Primary Care.  The VA Cooperative Studies Program is also available as an elective experience.

Benefits

The residency program provides a competitive stipend. Residents earn 13 days of paid vacation time and have 10 Federal Holidays per year. Sick leave is accrued at the rate of four hours every two weeks. Educational leave is provided to attend the Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents, Fellows, and Preceptors at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA.
